STONE

The weight of marble, turned into light.

Fiore is a fixed marble table lamp, its shade carved thin enough that the light glows through the stone itself. It was the first lamp we made, and the one the whole family grew from. We take a heavy block of marble and work it down to a fine edge, until the stone reads almost like a petal on its stem. Carved that thin, the marble turns translucent, and the glow it gives is warm and low, a lamp for the spaces you actually sit in, at home, in a workplace, across a restaurant or a bar.

The shape is roughed out on the 5-axis machine we program, then we bring the edge back by hand, which is where the hours go. Every top is cut from natural stone, so the veining lands differently on each one and no two are alike. We make the stem and base in brushed brass, aged brass or turned aluminium, and choose the metal to sit with the stone rather than fight it. On the brass bases the casting leaves small pores in the metal, a surface that marks each lamp as its own. Fiore stays fixed and corded, made to find its place and keep it.

By stone

Calacatta
It is a white marble with bold, unstructured veining running from grey to gold. The top sits on a brushed or aged brass base, the warm metal picking up the gold notes in the stone.
Calacatta Viola
It carries deep aubergine and black veins drifting across a white ground, no two slabs alike. Here the top meets a brushed aluminium base, a cooler metal that lets the stone keep all the colour.
Estremoz Rosa
It is a classic Portuguese marble from the Estremoz region, a soft rosé tone laced with light grey to red veins that give it depth and quiet contrast. It is paired with an aged brass base, the patina echoing the warm hue of the stone.
Statuario
It is one of the great white marbles, heavy grey veining drawn across a clouded white field, quarried in limited supply. Its brushed aluminium base keeps the piece lighter on its feet and lets the stone hold the eye.
Azul
Fiore Azul is a limited run, the only blue stone Maami Home works with. It is cut not from marble but from Azul Macaubas quartzite, coloured by a rare mineral, Dumortierite, that runs from the palest blue to deep azure like the sea at dusk. The stone is carved thin enough to read as translucent, and the light it gives is cool and low. The base is brushed aluminium.

Good to know

Is the Fiore cordless?

No. Fiore is a fixed, corded lamp made to find its place and stay there. The portable, rechargeable version is the mini Fiore.

Does the light pass through the stone?

Yes. The stone is carved thin enough to turn translucent, so the light glows through the marble itself, a warm, low glow rather than a beam. The limited Azul quartzite reads especially translucent, with a cooler, lower light.

Which stones is the Fiore available in?

Calacatta, Calacatta Viola, Estremoz Rosa from Portugal, Statuario, and the limited-series Azul Macaubas quartzite.

What is the base made of?

Brushed brass, aged brass or turned aluminium, chosen to sit with the stone. Brass bases are sand-cast, so each carries the small pores of the casting.
