As the stage is set for the grand entrance of a new year, MAAMI Home is about to steal the spotlight with the much-anticipated reveal of its latest design piece—the LUMI S lamp. LUMI S pre-history
Born four years after the inception of its big sister, LUMI, the demand for a more portable and table-friendly version led to the birth of LUMI S. Our designer, Mara Soares, embarked on a creative journey to expand the collection. After countless prototypes and experiments, LUMI S emerged in three distinct marble types—Italian Calacatta and Calacatta Viola, as well as the beloved Portuguese Estremoz. These carefully chosen marbles are not just for show; they were selected because they allow the warm yellow tones of light to dance through the stone, accentuating the veins and enhancing the beauty of marble.
Production processes
Crafted from a single block of marble, each LUMI S undergoes a meticulous production process, seamlessly blending cutting-edge machinery with skilled artisanal handwork. The journey involves complex processes, including a machining process with a 5-axis CNC machine, lathe machine and a giant drill. The finishing touches are applied by our skilled artisans who have a keen eye for noticing imperfections and choosing the best finishing processes. We are here to state that this lamp combines the art of design, new technology and traditional techniques.
Form meets function: the dance of light
The shape and design of the lamp closely follows MAAMI’s HOME design DNA of minimal and functional style. Initially shaped as a cylinder, the marble piece is accompanied by softened rounded edges and 5 rings that are carved to the limits of the marble stone, to demonstrate the craftsmanship and challenge the material. What appears simple at first glance transforms into an extraordinary piece, challenging the very essence of the material.
And let's not forget to talk about the light! We know that even when switched off, LUMI S is a work of art! Nontheless, as mentioned earlier, Mara carefully selected materials based on their stone density to allow light to cast a warm yellow glow throughout the space. The light gracefully travels through the opening at the top, projecting a captivating dance towards the ceiling, while the thinly carved marble at the bottom creates a cozy ambiance all around. Mara herself states, "In LUMI S, I sought to create harmony between aesthetics and utility. Each feature and material was chosen with a purpose, seeking not only to illuminate a space but also to awaken a sense of beauty and balance, transforming light into a unique visual experience." We couldn't agree more!
