Lumi
One block of stone, opened to the light.
Lumi is a floor lamp carved from a single block of marble, a tall, rounded body banded by a set of fine horizontal cuts. The openings are where it comes alive. Light leaves through the slots and, where we carve the stone thin, glows through the marble itself, so the whole body seems lit, not only its core. It holds its weight on the floor and works as easily indoors as in a sheltered outdoor corner.
It is a quiet, sculptural object before it is a light source. We shape the form on the 5-axis machine we program and finish it by hand, cutting the bands clean so the veining runs uninterrupted above and below them.

- It is a white Italian marble with grey and gold veining. On a body this size the veining has room to move, drifting across the surface and catching warm where the light passes through.

Is the Lumi a floor lamp or a table lamp?
It is a floor lamp, carved from a single block of marble. The smaller table version of this idea is the Lumi S.
Does the light pass through the stone?
Yes. Light leaves through the fine horizontal openings and, where the marble is carved thin, glows through the stone itself, so the whole body reads lit.
Can the Lumi be used outdoors?
It suits indoor use and a sheltered outdoor corner. It does not carry an IP rating, so it should not be exposed to direct rain.
Who designed the Lumi and what stone is it?
Designed by Mara Soares, carved from Calacatta, a white Italian marble with grey and gold veining.
